Chapter 23 Special Case Handling Base
Chapter 23 Special Case Handling Base
Xu Yan couldn't sleep because she had something on her mind, so she decided to find something to do to pass the time. As for waking up the landlady, she had the ambition but not the guts!
"Let's go together then!" Chongyang and Xu Yan chatted and laughed all the way, mostly talking about Huan Yuechu.
The sounds of vendors selling their wares rose and fell at the entrance of the market. For Xu Yan, a novice in life, she could only follow behind the experienced Chongyang.
Chongyang bought scallions, ginger, garlic, lettuce, pork ribs, lobsters, fish... Xu Yan was dumbfounded listening to Chongyang's bargaining and could only give him a thumbs up in her heart.
In the blink of an eye, Chongyang and Xu Yan's hands were full of things. When Chongyang saw that he had bought almost everything, he headed back home.
Chongyang put down the dishes and noticed Xu Yan frowning as he looked at the pile of food. He offered to help, saying, "Brother Xu Yan, sit down and rest for a while. Leave the rest to me."
"Okay...okay, I really can't cook, so I'll have to trouble you!" Xu Yan breathed a sigh of relief when she realized she didn't have to cook. She couldn't even tell the difference between salt and sugar, so she decided not to cause any trouble.
Xu Yan stared intently at the stairwell, hoping that Huan Yuechu would appear at any moment. At this time, Huan Yuechu was fast asleep, immersed in her own sweet dream.
After a while, Chongyang brought all the prepared breakfast to the table, took off her apron, and stood at the kitchen doorway, shouting towards the third floor, "Sister Yuechu, breakfast is ready!"
Hearing the commotion, Xu Yan admired Chongyang's courage and hurriedly ran out to check. In an instant, Huan Yuechu appeared downstairs at the inn on time. She walked steadily toward the kitchen without any sign of panic.
Xu Yan was speechless with shock.
"Brother Xu Yan, what are you looking at at the door? Hurry up and eat breakfast, or it will get cold and won't taste good." What Chongyang thought was very ordinary was unbelievable in Xu Yan's eyes.
"Chongyang, what delicious food did you make today?" I got up as soon as I smelled the aroma; I can't miss out on any good food.
"Sister Chuyue, today we have braised noodles, pan-fried buns, scallion pancakes, crispy baked buns, and millet porridge." Chongyang said with a face full of pride as she introduced the dishes.
Chongyang never imagined that he would become a chef one day. Seeing others eat the food he made was an affirmation of his culinary skills, and he was overjoyed.
As I ate the crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside scallion pancake filled with scallions, I exclaimed, "Chongyang, how did you make such a delicious pancake!" Enough with the chit-chat, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Xu Yan sat down on the stool, casually picked up a crispy fried dough stick and took a bite. The dough stick was crispy and the filling was generous. Mmm! The taste was unforgettable.
After Xu Yan finished eating, she wiped her mouth and said with satisfaction, "Chongyang, I didn't expect you to have such good cooking skills. Why don't you come and be my private chef? I'll pay you a salary. Do you want to consider it?"
Upon hearing this, Chongyang anxiously looked at Huan Yuechu. Seeing that Huan Yuechu was focused on eating breakfast and ignoring Xu Yan, his tense heart finally relaxed.
"Thank you for your kindness, Brother Xu Yan. I only want to be a cook for Sister Yuechu. If you want to eat other delicacies, you can come to the inn and find me, and I will cook them for you." Chongyang has never been able to do this before, but he has achieved some success. From beginning to end, he only wanted to cook the food that Huan Yuechu wanted to eat.
"Xu Yan, you're poaching people right in front of me, are you pretending I'm not here?" Huan Yuechu spoke up to ease the tension after Chongyang had expressed his intentions.
Even if Chongyang really wants to leave, I won't force him to stay. Water flows uphill, and people strive for higher positions; this is an age-old truth. But I would be happy to hear that Chongyang wants to stay; it feels good to have more family.
"Boss lady, that's not true. It's just that I thought Chongyang's cooking skills were quite good, so I took a liking to him," Xu Yan explained.
I slowly put down my chopsticks, glanced at Xu Yan, and said in a deep voice, "According to you, I'm being wasted on my talents!"
Xu Yan panicked and frantically waved her hands, indicating that she did not mean that.
Look how anxious this child is, he can't even speak properly!
I ignored Xu Yan and turned to Chongyang, instructing him, "Chongyang, I have to go out for a while later. Keep an eye on the inn and call me if anything happens."
"Okay, Sister Yuechu, don't worry, I'll keep an eye on the inn!" Chongyang patted her chest and assured her that she would take good care of the inn.
I watched Chongyang's actions; they were a bit exaggerated, but I didn't say anything. Then I looked at Xu Yan and said coldly, "Let's go!"
Seeing the differential treatment, Xu Yan was furious, but she couldn't say it out loud. She could only obediently follow behind Huan Yuechu like a submissive wife.
Stepping out of the inn, Xu Yan, with great foresight, opened the car door, and Huan Yuechu sat in the back seat while Xu Yan drove.
Time flies, and half an hour later, the car stopped at the special case handling base.
I opened the car door and got out. What greeted my eyes was overgrown weeds, a desolate scene, and a deserted place. Wasn't this the middle of nowhere?
And I didn't even know where the entrance was? I was instantly dumbfounded. I had only slept for a while in the car! Shouldn't we be at the police station? What kind of place is this? Why did they bring me to this godforsaken place?
Xu Yan parked the car, walked over to me, her face full of pride, and the corners of her mouth turned up. "This is the special case handling base."
A crack appeared on my composed face. "Excuse my bluntness! This place is even more shabby than my inn. Are you sure this is the place?" Opposite me was just an ordinary wall, covered in thorns and moss. I tried to sense the presence of life... Sorry! There was none.
Xu Yan said with certainty, "This is the place!"
I wanted to see where this base you were talking about was. Xu Yan calmly walked to the opposite moss-covered wall and pressed a button. With a series of "click-clack" sounds, the mechanical stone door, about ten meters behind me, slowly opened.
I was careless! There were stone walls all around. I didn't expect a case-handling base to be hidden so well. "Xu Yan, didn't you try to hide it from me at all? You just blatantly told me where the switch is."
"Seeing it won't help. The switches use both facial recognition and fingerprint locks, neither of which can be missing. Even if you manage to get in, the mechanisms inside will make you go in vertically and come out horizontally." Xu Yan was absolutely confident in the mechanisms inside.
After Xu Yan said that, I felt a little excited and wanted to test the waters. But then I remembered that I couldn't create cause and effect, and the thought was quickly extinguished.
"Now that the door is open, you lead the way," I said expressionlessly, without any desire or expectation of anything.
Seeing that I wasn't surprised or curious at all, Xu Yan asked in bewilderment, "Boss lady, aren't you curious?" He felt that I was like a robot without worldly desires.
“Curiosity comes at a price,” I said seriously, glancing at him.
Xu Yan thought about it and realized it made sense; those who had been there before had all paid with their lives. She then said no more and obediently led the way.
In the blink of an eye, we crossed the stone gate and walked inside. The road was brightly lit, and the passage felt damp, indicating that there was more than one entrance and exit, like a cunning rabbit with multiple burrows.
