Chapter 55 Kaya Hartley
Chapter 55 Kaya Hartley
Chapter 61, Section 16.4 - Trip to Nexus
"Ah...you've finally shown up."
The moment the demon contractor appeared, Kaya's eyes narrowed slightly.
“It seems our information was correct,” he said, and what happened next was something Kaya had never anticipated.
'Information? There's a mole.' She concluded to herself. But that wasn't the most important thing right now.
The man before her was very strong. She could feel it. She didn't have time to think about what had happened here, or how he knew she was here.
She needs to deal with the man in front of her first.
"What, somewhat surprised?" the demon contractor asked, looking at her with a mocking expression. He exuded an aura of incompetence, but he wasn't Kaya's only problem.
Beside him, a monster was tethered by a rope, while other monsters had already begun to wreak havoc. This was a planned attack, a joint effort by monsters and demon contractors.
“I have no answer to a heretic like you; you have sold your souls.” She finally spoke, staring at the man. “People like you are a disgrace to our society.” With that, she touched the bracelet on her wrist, from which she drew her weapon. It was a long spear, radiating a sinister black aura.
The demon contractor let out a mocking laugh. "Oh, Kaya Hartley, your words are elegant. I must admit, after so long, seeing you make your move excites me. After all, your reputation has spread far and wide. I really want to know where your values will lead you at the end of this path."
His smile widened, revealing some teeth that seemed overly sharp.
Kaya gripped her weapon tightly, an aura of focus and determination emanating from her. Her gaze met that of the demon contractor, her expression resolute and unyielding.
Then, as if the world had changed, the museum transformed into an arena of conflict. The clash of wills and power echoed in the air, and the line between hunters and demon contractors was drawn.
The demon contractor seemed to be observing for some reason, but she knew. The longer it went on, the more people would die. She could see that the museum's security guards had already been dealt with; it was clearly a planned operation.
'I have to end this as soon as possible,' she concluded. 'Jane is still here.' She knew she was the only one who could protect herself and Jane now, so she had to act quickly.
Swoosh
She gripped her spear tightly and charged at the man. The spear was illuminated by red magic, radiating her determination and the aura of her magical control.
Keng
The demon contractor met her attack with fluid and strangely elegant movements. He wielded a menacing sword, its blade infused with black energy that seemed capable of devouring the surrounding light.
He skillfully swung his sword, deflecting Kaya's spear attack; the impact echoed through the air.
clang clang
However, both she and the demon contractor could sense the difference in their power.
“Even after all this time, it seems I’m still far behind you,” the demon contractor muttered, but Kaya felt a sense of familiarity.
The person was someone she thought she knew, but because his face was covered, she had no idea who he was. His voice was also indistinct, as if he was having difficulty breathing.
clang clang
Their clash was like a song of magic and steel. Kaya's spear gleamed with magical power, each strike calculated with precision. Her movements were a testament to her training and skill.
In contrast, the Demon Contractor attacks with deadly intent. His sword slices through the air, each swing imbued with demonic energy that corrupts the surrounding atmosphere.
The black energy made breathing difficult, and Kaya had to control it.
'This heretic. He tries to drain the life force from those around him.'
Kaya saw through his intentions, and she knew she couldn't let him do as he pleased.
During the battle with the demon contractor, Kaya also kept a close eye on the monsters around him.
The monster's roars and growls became the eerie background music to their duel, reminding her of the dual threats she faced.
'I have to deal with this monster first,' Kaya thought. She could see signs that the monster was preparing to attack; she could sense it in its muscles.
Even for her, fighting both demon contractors and monsters simultaneously would be difficult. It would expose the power gap between her and the demon contractors, which was not what she wanted.
With a surge of determination, Kaya spun around, her spear flying towards the monster. She intended to destroy it quickly, knowing that distraction was risky.
'Hartley's First Move - Whirlwind.'
Once she was in position, she immediately attacked the monster and quickly disappeared from the spot.
Swoosh
Her spear pierced the air, pointing directly at the monster's exposed flank.
Swoosh
However, the Demon Contractor was not just standing by and watching.
"Not under my nose!"
Taking advantage of her distraction, he swiftly counterattacked with his sword, the blade extending his will like a demon.
Kaya's intuition was suddenly awakened, and a surge of magic enhanced her reflexes. She moved subtly, narrowly dodging the demon contractor's blade; the movement was fluid and graceful. However, her evasion significantly reduced the damage she inflicted on the monster's initial attack.
boom
The demon contractor's attack slammed into the ground, generating a shockwave that shook the surrounding environment and destroyed the museum's protective mechanisms.
Snap, squeak, squeak, squeak
As the shockwave propagated, the protective glass surrounding the exhibit shattered one by one.
Kaya dodged the most fatal blow, but the aftershock still caused her to lose her balance instantly.
She quickly regained her footing and refocused on the battle at hand. She wasn't the type to fall over from a single collision.
Swoosh
Then, she attacked the demon contractor again, aiming straight for his abdomen.
Keng
“I knew you’d do this,” the demon contractor said with a mocking smile. A familiar glint in his voice sent a chill down Kaya’s spine. But there was no time to think. She had to focus on the battle.
Roar
Before she could react, a low growl came from her side. The monster, though wounded, was far from defeated and had seized the opportunity to distract her.
Swoosh
The monster, with its enormous size, burst forth with astonishing speed, lunging at Kaya with its jaws wide open.
Keng
Kaya's intuition kicked in once more; her reflexes had been honed to perfection. She twisted her body in mid-air, slashing upwards with her spear to meet the monster's attack.
The collision was extremely intense; the monster's teeth were only inches from her face, but she successfully blocked its attack.
"Humph."
Kaya gave a forced, cold snort as she desperately resisted the monster's attacks, her eyes filled with unwavering resolve. The monster spewed a foul stench from its mouth, a mixture of saliva and dark energy.
The ground cracked open from her power, and the two were locked in a battle of strength and will. Kaya's muscles tensed under the pressure, her expression unwavering, sweat dripping down her face.
Swoosh
With a final burst of power, Kaya infused her magic into the spear, causing it to shine once more. With immense force, she slammed forward, successfully pushing the monster away.
'Now is the time!'
Bang
The monster staggered back, its momentum broken. Kaya wasted no time, her fluid movements launching another attack, her spear aimed straight for the monster's heart.
The monster roared, its pain and rage intertwined, trying to evade her attack. However, it knew it couldn't escape. Its body shattered under the effect of Kaya's magic—a unique and precise method of attack that directly transmitted the impact of the blow into the monster's body.
Swoosh
However, the demon contractor reappeared before her, as if mocking her attacks. It was as if he knew her every move.
But Kaya had guessed all of this.
'I knew it.'
When the demon contractor appeared before her, emanating a green aura, she saw the sword approaching her face.
The man's face screamed "Game Over," but Kaya's movements were swift and precise.
"Oh."
Swoosh
With a confident smile, she swiftly dodged the demon contractor's attack, relying on her extraordinary physical strength. The blade grazed her but failed to strike its target.
thorn
With a perfect dodge, Kaya seized the opportunity.
"Well-!"
Her spear struck its target, piercing the man's side with a nauseating sound. The man's scream turned into a agonizing howl, his body writhing in agony.
喷
Fresh blood gushed from the man's mouth.
When she pulled out the spear, Kaya saw faint traces of magic remaining on the wound.
That was left behind to ensure that the man's recovery speed was slowed down; it was a technique she developed after fighting against many demon contractors.
She knew they could usually regenerate quickly, so she used her own techniques to counter it.
She raised her spear again, ready to attack the man who was spitting blood.
Roar!
However, the monster did not stop when it saw its commander was injured. The seal on its neck was activated, and it lunged at Kaya with a loud bang.
Swoosh
The monster's mouth was full of saliva, almost right in front of her.
thorn
However, after her decisive moment of defeating the demon contractor, the monster was nothing to her anymore, like dessert after a meal.
Kaya's reaction was swift and deadly. Her spear, wielded with honed precision, struck the monster's weak point. In a flash, the weapon pierced its neck and emerged from its rear.
喷
Blood gushed from the wound, and the monster's movements grew weaker and weaker over time.
Bang
When Kaya retrieved her spear, the monster finally collapsed to the ground, utterly defeated.
Kaya's eyes flashed with seriousness and pride as she pulled the spear from the monster's body, the monster's black blood staining the blade of the weapon.
Her cold gaze swept across the battlefield, lingering on the fallen demon contractors and monsters. Destruction enveloped her all around, but she remained steadfast, unaffected by the chaos.
This scene was not unfamiliar to Kaya; it was a reflection of everything she had experienced, the path she had walked so far. It was a path filled with the blood of countless monsters and the exploration of countless dungeons.
From another perspective, this is a life full of destruction.
"Hahahahahaha..."
Just then, a burst of laughter rang out.
The demon contractor lay on the ground, his wounds still present but not yet healed, and a maniacal smile on his face.
“After all, you’re a monster inside too,” he said, staring at Kaya.
'What is this guy talking about?' she thought. She didn't understand what he was saying.
"You must be wondering what I'm talking about right now, right? You think I'm talking nonsense."
His smile widened.
"In the heat of battle, you've forgotten who you came with. Even if it was your own daughter."
These words struck her like a heavy blow, causing Kaya's heart to pound violently. She turned abruptly, her chest tightening with fear, only to be met with a horrifying sight.
"Do not."
Before her, another demon contractor was holding her daughter Jane, the small body struggling under his control. A gag was stuffed in her mouth, muffled sobs escaped her lips, and her eyes were filled with terror.
"No. Jane!"
Her eyes filled with tears, and fear filled her gaze. Kaya saw her daughter struggling desperately under the man's control.
"Uh-huh"
Her cries were muffled by the strips of cloth, reaching Kaya's ears, and she felt as if the world had frozen.
It was a faint presence that she had overlooked during the intense battle.
No, it wasn't that she overlooked it.
Rather, she simply ignored it, believing it couldn't harm her at all. This was a subconscious reaction during intense combat.
That stemmed from her excitement.
An overwhelming sense of guilt washed over her as she realized the danger her daughter was in.
"simple!"
Kaya's voice choked with pain, her eyes brimming with tears that hadn't yet fallen. She reached out, as if to touch her daughter, but the distance between them seemed so vast.
"Now, say goodbye to your daughter, you hypocrite. Perhaps that way you can understand how I felt back then. However, I'm not sure what you can still feel," the demon contractor mocked, his words like venom.
Despair gripped Kaya's heart; every nerve screamed for help to save her daughter.
The man's dagger drew ever closer to Jane's neck, threatening to kill her.
"No!"
boom!
A gunshot shattered the air, the sound echoing through the museum like thunder. In the blink of an eye, the man who had grabbed Jane was struck, a bullet piercing his head.
喷
Blood gushed from the wound, staining Jane's petite body red.
Bang
The man fell to the ground, lost control, and released Jane.
