Chapter 4 Hearing the Heart's Voice
Chapter 4 Hearing the Heart's Voice
After more than two months of recuperation, Ying Wuyou had fully recovered and no longer needed to take herbal medicine. Overjoyed, she began to sing: "Today is a good day, all my wishes will come true, today is a good day, I open my door to welcome the New Year!..."
After finishing his dinner, the King of Qin was strolling around the palace, when he heard unfamiliar melodies drifting from afar. He stopped and listened for a while, until the singing stopped. Then he said, "Go and find out who is singing this song."
Hearing the King of Qin's words, Zhao Gao turned around and saw a young eunuch. He beckoned to the eunuch, who looked up and saw Zhao Gao waving at him. The eunuch quickly ran over, and Zhao Gao said to him, "Go and see where that tune came from." The eunuch bowed and said, "Yes," then took a few steps back and turned to run towards the source of the sound.
King Qin continued to stroll around the palace. In fact, King Qin usually did not have time to stroll around, but he was a little sleepy after dinner tonight, so he thought that strolling around would help him digest his food, relieve his sleepiness, and give his brain a rest.
As they strolled along, they arrived here and heard this unfamiliar melody. The King of Qin had never heard this melody before, but he felt that it had a grand and stirring feel to it, which was quite nice. However, although the women of Qin were not as strictly disciplined as those of other dynasties, singing loudly in the palace would damage the royal dignity, so the King of Qin was somewhat displeased.
The young eunuch rushed over and knelt down, saying, "Your Majesty, I just learned that the courtyard belongs to the Thirteenth Princess, and the song you were singing just now was also sung by her." After saying this, the young eunuch nervously lay prostrate on the ground, awaiting his fate.
Although this matter had nothing to do with him, it was common for messengers to be flogged or even beaten to death for reporting bad news. Who told him to be unlucky enough to run into this mess?
Upon hearing the eunuch's report, the King of Qin immediately pictured a small, thin, and frail little girl. Her face was trembling with nervousness, like a candle flame flickering in the wind, so fragile that it was heartbreaking.
Although the King of Qin had many children, he truly valued only Fusu. His other children were like fleeting clouds to him, unfamiliar to him. His youngest son, Huhai, however, received some favor because he was fearless of the King and possessed a sweet tongue that pleased him. As for the other children, they had little contact with the King and trembled like frightened rabbits in his presence, appearing utterly useless and naturally disliked by him.
However, to the King of Qin's surprise, the usually timid little girl had the audacity to sing loudly in the palace, a truly unbecoming act. "Let's go see!" the King of Qin said, striding towards the courtyard, Zhao Gao following closely behind. The kneeling eunuch waited until the King and his entourage were far away before slowly rising from the ground, wiping the large beads of sweat from his forehead, a huge weight lifted from his shoulders. Clutching his pounding chest, he vanished like a gust of wind.
Ying Wuyou, unaware that she was about to meet the First Emperor, was still swinging on the newly built swing in the courtyard. Looking at the blue sky and white clouds, smelling the fragrance of the flowers, Ying Wuyou was in a wonderful mood, and when she was in a good mood, she wanted to sing. In her previous life, Qin Wuyou also loved to sing, but because she didn't have many friends and was socially awkward, she always went to karaoke alone when she wanted to sing. Actually, Qin Wuyou felt that going to karaoke alone was really great; no one would laugh at her for singing badly, she wouldn't be afraid of fighting for the microphone, and she didn't have to worry about embarrassing herself. So, going to karaoke alone became Qin Wuyou's usual pastime during her leisure time.
Having transmigrated to the Qin Dynasty, Ying Wuyou was so happy that she sang a song. After finishing "Good Days," Ying Wuyou was searching her mind for other tunes when she suddenly heard a voice in her head: "[Hello host, I am your system. My name is Little Apple. I will guide you through the tasks. When the time comes, you can make a wish on my behalf, and your wish will definitely be granted!]"
Looking at the white ragdoll cat floating in the air before him, Ying Wuyou was dumbfounded. [What the hell? I actually have a system, but why did it arrive so late?] Ying Wuyou complained inwardly.
Just as King Qin was about to reach Ying Wuyou's courtyard, he suddenly heard the two voices from before and quickened his pace. "His Majesty has arrived!" Zhao Gao announced loudly. Hearing the voices outside, Ying Wuyou, without having time to think about the system, hurriedly came out and bowed to King Qin, saying, "Thirteen, greetings to Your Majesty!"
King Qin said calmly, "Get up!" Ying Wuyou hurriedly stood up, unsure of what to do next. She was very nervous. When she first transmigrated, she had imagined what it would be like to meet the First Emperor, but she never expected that the First Emperor, whom she usually only saw twice a year, would suddenly appear before her today, right in her courtyard. Ying Wuyou's mind went blank! She stood there dumbfounded, staring blankly at King Qin.
The King of Qin looked at the young girl staring directly at him. She seemed to be the same trembling girl he remembered, yet her demeanor and mannerisms were completely different. Thinking about the voice he had just heard, the King of Qin was puzzled. He directly asked Ying Wuyou, "Who were you talking to just now?"
Ying Wuyou was caught off guard by the question and was completely bewildered. She thought to herself, [I wasn't talking to anyone! Who was I talking to? Was it Xiao Cui? But that was just a few minutes ago. Could it be that the First Emperor was eavesdropping outside? Does the First Emperor have such a hobby?]
The King of Qin looked at Qin Wuyou before him. She didn't speak, but her voice clearly rang out: "What exactly is going on? Could there be an assassin? No, the voice is that of my daughter. So what's happening?"
Upon hearing Ying Wuyou accuse him of eavesdropping, the King of Qin roared, "Insolence!" Hearing the First Emperor's anger, Ying Wuyou's knees buckled and she knelt down. She assumed the First Emperor was angry because she hadn't answered his question, so she stammered, "Father...Father, Thirteen...just...said...a few words...to the maid earlier, I don't know...if I said anything wrong? Thirteen...will definitely correct it! Please forgive me, Father!" With that, Ying Wuyou knelt down completely.
Ying Wuyou was terrified. In her mind, she cried out to the system: "[Help! System! System! Help! I don't know where I offended the First Emperor, why am I going to die so soon after transmigrating?]"
The King of Qin looked at Ying Wuyou kneeling before him, pondering her words, and then heard a cry for help. [That was indeed Thirteen's voice, but she didn't open her mouth. How was that sound produced? Also, this was the second time he'd heard the word "system." What did that mean? Was it a person's name? Why would someone choose such a strange name?]
[Host, this system has no program to protect you, so you'll have to fend for yourself! But the First Emperor is wise and mighty, and he certainly won't kill you. At most, you'll get a beating. Host, I believe in you! Good luck, host!] The system's cold, mechanical voice rang in Ying Wuyou's mind.
Ying Wuyou was utterly frustrated. [System, how could you do this? Other people's systems have all sorts of perks and multiple identities, but your system can't do anything! Why am I so unlucky?]
The King of Qin heard that cold voice again, this time clearly; it wasn't a human voice at all. In an instant, the King of Qin was consumed by rage and extreme frustration, feeling that things had spiraled out of his control, which filled him with immense resentment. Yet, he couldn't simply execute the child without cause; after all, Thirteen was his own flesh and blood, and he couldn't just behead him without reason. Moreover, the child was so small and thin; he probably wouldn't withstand many blows, and he couldn't leave him to his own devices. He had to have him closely monitored. The King of Qin suppressed his burning anger and strode away.
Ying Wuyou stared at the kneeling maids and eunuchs, and at the tall figure receding into the distance, feeling utterly bewildered. [Suddenly, she saw the First Emperor, and despite doing nothing, she was harshly reprimanded. And then the First Emperor just turned and left? Just like that?]
