Chapter 35 Finding Gold
Chapter 35 Finding Gold
For the next two days, Wen Yuxia went out to check on the situation every day. On the third day at noon, Wen Yuxia told Wang Ping that the madman had left and they could continue their journey.
With nothing to do while hiding in the hollow, the restless Wang family members peeled all the spiky shells off the chestnuts. Of the seven bags of chestnuts, four remained. The grain that had been in the burlap sacks was also divided into two cloth bags.
The group walked back along the path they had come from, heading out of the woods. As they approached the main road, Wen Yuxia cautiously observed the road before finally stepping out of the woods with peace of mind. "Grandpa, we can't enter the city; we'll have to go around it."
The city gates of Anyang County were tightly shut, and corpses littered the area outside the city. Wang Ping calmly said, "Boss, go over there and see if there's anything usable, and pick it up."
Wang An then added, "Big Tree, you three brothers should come along too."
"Uncle, wait a minute. We can also rummage through those corpses to see if there's any silver. We need to get out of here as quickly as possible, within the time it takes for an incense stick to burn."
Wen Yuxia called out to Wang Dazhu and the others, took out five pairs of disposable gloves from her bag, and continued:
"The corpse has been left out for several days to prevent the spread of plague. Anyone touching the corpse must wear gloves. All silver found must be put together. Except for grain... do not pick up any large items."
The deceased is gone, and the living must continue their escape. She didn't know if the Wang family had any money left.
The corpses on the ground had already been thoroughly searched, making it impossible to find any silver on them. Sending Wang Dazhu and the others to search the bodies was merely a smokescreen; Wen Yuxia wanted to use this opportunity to take some silver from her spatial storage.
The importance of silver was self-evident to everyone present. Taking advantage of the fact that no fleeing civilians passed by and the patrolling soldiers on the city wall did not show themselves,
Wang Ping asked Wen Yuxia for two pairs of gloves and followed along with Wang An. Wen Yuxia herself also joined the group searching the corpse.
When the time it takes for an incense stick to burn was up, Wang Dazhu called his brothers to head back. Wang Ping and Wang An also returned to the edge of the woods, and Wen Yuxia was the last to return.
She was carrying a delicate little wooden box, which she had already opened and examined; inside were two gold ingots and five silver ingots.
She didn't take the gold and silver from her spatial storage; she found it in a broken compartment in a carriage.
"Grandpa, look," Wen Yuxia said happily, handing the wooden box to Wang Ping.
After opening the package, Wang Ping paused for a moment, then said to Wen Yuxia, "Da Ya, we didn't find a single copper coin. The gold you found is yours, but the silver can be left for your maternal grandfather and great-grandfather, okay?"
Wen Yuxia said with a faint smile, "Grandpa, the gold and silver belong to all three families. We'll rely on this money for our food and drink along the way, as well as for buying land and building houses when we arrive..."
According to Wen Yuxia, one shouldn't put all their eggs in one basket; the two gold ingots were to be kept by Wen Yuxia and Wang Ping.
The five silver ingots were kept by Wang An, Wang Dazhu, Wang Dashu, Wang Ershu, and Wang Sanshu, and the purchase of supplies would be made from these silver ingots.
Wang Ping and his team searched for the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, finding only three wheelbarrows, two earthenware pots, more than ten chipped clay bowls, a wooden ladle, two wooden basins, and a few pieces of tattered clothing that no one had picked up.
Wen Yuxia pushed the wheelbarrow and understood why no one had picked them up. She sighed, "It's no use, the wheelbarrows are broken."
Wang Ping laughed and said, "Your third cousin knows carpentry; he just said he can fix it."
Wen Yuxia was somewhat pleased. If the wheelbarrow could be repaired, people wouldn't have to carry the grain and the pile of miscellaneous items on the ground anymore, and there might even be room for people to ride on it.
After Wang Sanshu painstakingly repaired the broken wheelbarrow, he fixed it.
Wang Ping directed his son and nephews to tie all the grain, along with the scavenged pots, pans, sacks, and burlap sacks, onto two wheelbarrows.
The remaining wheelbarrow was pushed by Wang Sanshu, with his five-month pregnant wife, Li, and Wang Ershu's four-year-old twins, Gouwa and Heiwa, sitting on it.
The other two wheelbarrows were pushed by Wang Dazhu and Wang Dashu. Wang Dazhu even thoughtfully made room for Wen Yunhong to sit on one of the wheelbarrows.
Only 7-year-old Wen Yuxia, 6-year-old Wang Hu, and Tiedan remained on foot; the rest were all adults. Their pace was noticeably faster than before.
Following the main road—no, it should be followed a narrow, winding path—this road beside the city wall wasn't an official road at all, but a narrow alley. In its wider sections, it was wide enough for an oxcart to pass, and in its narrower sections, only a wheelbarrow could pass.
Looking at the haphazardly arranged mule carts and horse-drawn carriages on the roadside slope, Wen Yuxia felt a pang of envy.
These were all discarded by refugees. If she put them into her spatial storage, she could sell these carriages for a good amount of money after she settled down.
Wen Yuxia walked slower and slower, gradually separating herself from Wang Ping's group. Avoiding the fleeing crowds, she quietly made her way up the slope.
Using the foremost carriage and frame as cover, he retrieved four magnificent horse-drawn carriages and four intact mule carts into his spatial storage, then hurried forward to catch up with the procession.
"Da Ya, Da Ya!" Wang Wushi stopped walking and called out anxiously as she realized Wen Yuxia was missing.
Wen Yuxia emerged from the crowd, smiling broadly, and said, "Grandma, I'm here!"
Wang Wushi reached out and grabbed her hand, saying sternly as they walked, "Don't run around like that again next time."
Wen Yuxia tiptoed and whispered in Wang Wu's ear, "Grandma, I didn't run away. I found something good."
"Shh, don't talk, let's go quickly," Wang Wushi, being an old and shrewd woman, didn't ask Wen Yuxia what she had found, but instead pulled her along quickly ahead.
Du, Gou, and Luo also heard Wang Wu's shouts. The three of them stopped at the same time and waited for Wang Wu and Wen Yuxia to catch up before continuing on their way.
As the sun gradually set and darkness fell, Wang Ping noticed many people resting by the roadside, so he found a gentle hillside as their resting place for the night.
After instructing Du to prepare dinner, Wang Wu pulled Wen Yuxia aside to a secluded spot and whispered, "Da Ya, what good thing did you find?"
Wen Yuxia smiled mysteriously, took a handful of plums from her handbag and handed them to Wang Wushi, gesturing for her to look inside the handbag.
When Wang Wu saw that there were still many plums in the bag, she asked in a low voice with surprise, "So many!"
Wen Yuxia explained, "I saw some wild fruits on the mountaintop just now, so I went up and picked some."
Actually, these plums weren't picked from the mountain; Wen Yuxia took them out of her spatial storage. When she was tidying up the carriages and they were out of Wang Wu's sight, she had a sudden inspiration and decided to take some fruit from her storage space to supplement her vitamins.
It's plum season now, and Wen Yuxia, possessing superb martial arts skills, can quickly run from the bottom of the mountain to the top. She can lie and say that the plums were picked from the summit; Wang Wushi certainly won't suspect a thing.
Wang Wu picked up a plum and examined it closely. It was yellow and large, emitting an enticing aroma. She carefully took a bite and her eyes lit up immediately: "So sweet!"
Wen Yuxia smiled smugly and said proudly, "I picked plums that are yellow and big, of course they're sweet!"
