Chapter 199 What are you doing here?
I helped my grandmother up while giving the doctor a wink. The doctor immediately understood and smiled at my grandmother, saying, "Grandma, your granddaughter-in-law is fine. She probably just caught a chill. Some medicine and a couple of injections will do the trick. I'll come back tomorrow to give her the injections again."
I glanced at the doctor gratefully; his cooperation put my mind at ease. Grandma nodded in relief, thanking the doctor repeatedly.
After we saw Dr. Li off, Grandma held my hand, her eyes full of concern: "Let's go see an old traditional Chinese medicine doctor together in a little while. I heard he's very good at conditioning the body. Only when the body is in good condition can we have a child as soon as possible."
Grandma's words were full of beautiful plans for the future; she hoped to see her grandson born soon so she could help us take care of him. However, I felt a mix of emotions. Given Grandma's age, we really didn't dare let her help us with the baby. Besides, there were plenty of women who wanted to have Jiang Yichen's child, but I was definitely not one of them.
A hint of embarrassment flashed across my face, but I couldn't explicitly refuse Grandma, so I could only vaguely agree. At this moment, my aunt interjected, "Mom, if you ask me, you're really getting senile. With his status, even if he had a child, it would only be an illegitimate child. How could it possibly inherit the Jiang family's business?"
Upon hearing this, Grandma slammed her hand on the table and angrily rebuked, "Xiao Chen is a member of the Jiang family, and his child is the eldest grandson. Why can't he inherit the family business? Also, stop saying things I don't like to hear lately!"
After being scolded by her grandmother, the auntie quieted down a lot, but she still kept muttering: "He was dumped by Jiang Yichen a long time ago. Now that they're together, it's just for fun. What's so great about him? Does he really think he's the young mistress of the Jiang family?"
Grandma's hearing isn't good, so she didn't hear what Auntie said, but I heard every single word. My eyes dimmed; I actually agreed with Auntie's assessment. My relationship with Jiang Yichen was illegitimate; even if I had a child, it would only be an illegitimate one.
I immediately lost interest in seeing a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. I made an excuse that I wasn't feeling well and wanted to go home to rest, and go another day. Grandma noticed that I was a little tired, but she didn't force me. She nodded silently and said, "It's okay. If you're really not feeling well, I'll have the doctor come to our house in a couple of days. It'll be the same."
Not wanting to upset Grandma, I simply replied with a casual "okay." Grandma has difficulty walking and doesn't often go upstairs, and my aunt doesn't like seeing me, much less come to my room. This way, Jiang Yichen can rest peacefully in my room.
When I returned to the room, Jiang Yichen was already asleep. I sat down beside him, raised my hand and gently touched his forehead; it was no longer hot.
But as I recalled the old lady's words, I still felt a little uncomfortable.
Our relationship is worse off a short, sharp pain than a long, drawn-out one. If this continues, it's like I'm being repeatedly fried in oil—it's just too unbearable.
After much deliberation, I finally decided to come to the company and tell Lin Nan about Jiang Yichen's current situation. I stood at the door of his office, pacing back and forth, pondering how to proceed. Just as I was hesitating, a questioning voice suddenly came from behind me: "What are you doing here?"
When I turned around, I saw Lin Nan holding a stack of documents, with his secretary standing next to him.
I hesitated for a moment, then said calmly, "Can I talk to you alone?"
Lin Nan glanced back at his secretary and calmly instructed, "Distribute these documents in a bit. We'll have a meeting in 20 minutes to discuss them together."
"Okay, Mr. Lin, I'll go right now." After the secretary left, Lin Nan led me to his office and poured me a glass of water, placing it on the desk. He casually asked, "So, what did you need me for?"
I took a deep breath and calmly stated, "Jiang Yichen is injured."
Lin Nan's brows furrowed immediately, and she asked excitedly, "How is he now? Has his wound been treated?"
Seeing her concerned expression, I felt a little uneasy.
I know very well that I should be happy that someone cares about and loves Jiang Yichen like this, instead of being jealous.
I tried hard to suppress my displeasure and said calmly, "He's fine for now."
I looked at Lin Nan; the concern on her face was genuine.
I tentatively suggested, "If you have time, you could go see him."
Unexpectedly, Lin Nan changed her usual demeanor and said coldly, "Since he's alright, I won't go. I have a lot of business to handle at the company."
Her attitude suddenly turned cold, and I was momentarily confused, not understanding what she really meant by Jiang Yichen.
Could it be that she doesn't want to see Jiang Yichen because I'm temporarily staying at the Jiang family's house? Thinking of this reason, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions.
I quickly explained, "I'm currently staying at the old house temporarily because my grandmother isn't feeling well. I'll move out after a while, so please don't misunderstand."
"Don't worry, I will definitely not delay your wedding."
Lin Nan looked at me with a strange and complicated expression. "You're overthinking it. I have work to do. If there's nothing else, you can go now!"
I looked at Lin Nan, trying to glean more information from her expression, but her face only held indifference and aloofness. I shook my head helplessly; perhaps I was overthinking things. I stood up and said, "That's all, I'll be going now."
Back at the Jiang family home, I gently pushed open the bedroom door and found Jiang Yichen still lying quietly on the bed, fast asleep. I stood by the bed, gazing at his peaceful sleeping face, and secretly resolved to find out as soon as possible whether Jiang Yichen was connected to the Gu family's bankruptcy.
Recalling the information I had learned from Jiang Yichen and the clues he had inadvertently revealed, I vaguely felt that the bottom box of the locker in the dressing room might hold a crucial secret.
So I tiptoed out of the bedroom and headed towards the dressing room.
Inside the locker room, I quickly found the box hidden at the very bottom of the locker.
The box looked unremarkable, but it gave off a heavy feeling, as if it contained something important. I took a deep breath and began trying to crack the combination.
I first entered several possible combinations of numbers, but the box didn't budge. Just as I was feeling a little frustrated, I suddenly, almost inexplicably, entered my own birthday.
Unexpectedly, the box opened with a "click".
I was startled and quickly opened the box to check its contents.
