Chapter 35 The Bride Ran Away
Chapter 35 The Bride Ran Away
Yunyi watched as the little girl closed her eyes and fell asleep before leaving the inner room.
"Sister, my sister..."
"She's asleep." Yunyi gestured for silence. "The needles will be removed in about fifteen minutes."
Upon hearing this, Ah Sheng hurriedly ran to the door and peeked inside. He then knelt down and kowtowed to Yun Yi, because his sister hadn't slept well for a long time. It wasn't that she didn't want to sleep, but that she would be woken up by coughing every time she fell asleep.
"Get up." Yunyi pulled him up. "Fetch out the water and set it aside. You can feed Xiaohua when she wakes up. By the way, do you have any food at home?"
Just then, footsteps sounded outside, and soon an old woman came in carrying a large bowl: "Ah Sheng, the village chief's family is serving meatballs... Who are you?"
"Hello, Grandma, I got lost on the mountain and ended up here. I'm asking for lodging." Yunyi quickly explained.
"Grandma, this is my older sister." Ah Sheng hurriedly went over and helped the old woman up. "She can cure my sister's illness."
"What?" Granny Cai was taken aback, seemingly not understanding.
"Grandma, this older sister can save my sister, she won't die," Ah Sheng hurriedly repeated.
"Really?"
Ah Sheng simply pulled Grandma Cai into the room.
When Grandma Cai saw the silver needles on her granddaughter's body, she was so surprised that she didn't know what to say. In the end, she also wanted to kowtow to Yunyi.
"Grandma," Yunyi quickly stopped her, "I got lost coming down from the mountain and came here to ask for lodging. It's fate that we met. Consider this my payment for the lodging."
"This..." Granny Cai's eyes reddened instantly. Suddenly remembering something, she turned around and took the bowl she had brought back. "Girl, there's not much to eat at home. This is some meat I brought back from the village chief's feast. It's clean, you..."
"Grandma, I brought some dry food." Yunyi took her basket and then realized that Shiba was nowhere to be found. However, she thought that the creature was very agile and that even if it had left, it should have gone back to the mountains, so she wasn't too worried. "Do you have any rice at home? Make some rice porridge so that Ahua can drink some when she wakes up."
"Yes, there's still some rice and flour at home." Grandma Cai said as she went into the house, took out her key, pulled out a cloth bag from the cabinet, and took out a handful of rice. "I'll cook porridge right now." Perhaps feeling that one handful of rice wasn't enough for more people, she grabbed another handful.
The Dendrobium officinale that was being boiled in the pot was put into a large earthenware jar for storage. After washing the rice, Grandma Cai washed two sweet potatoes and put them in as well. After all, there was not enough rice, so the soup would be almost all that was cooked.
Ahua woke up after dinner was ready and slept for a full half hour.
Everyone was very happy, especially the little girl, who hadn't slept soundly in a long time.
Yunyi brought four wheat flour pancakes up the mountain, thinking they might take a while. She ate one on the way down, and now there are three left. So she took them out and soaked them in thin rice porridge, along with some pickled vegetables. It made for a pretty good dinner.
"No, you mustn't!" Granny Cai hurriedly waved her hand. "This is white flour, you keep it for yourself." This girl didn't even ask for money for her granddaughter's medical treatment, and now she wants to give them white flour, how could they accept it?
"Grandma," Yunyi said, placing the flatbread on the table. "If it weren't for Ah Sheng's kindness in bringing me home, I'd probably be sleeping on the streets. This is nothing."
In the end, Grandma Cai couldn't bear to soak all three flatbreads. She only gave one to her grandchildren, and then divided the meat and vegetables she brought back into three portions, claiming that she would eat them herself.
Yunyi only ate porridge, instant noodles, and pancakes, and then gave away the meatballs as well.
Grandma Cai could only wipe away her tears, saying that she had met a fairy.
That evening, Grandma Cai shared a room with her grandchildren, giving the other room to Yunyi.
In summer, it gets dark late. By the time all the light is gone, it's probably past eight o'clock in the evening. But I had only been lying down for a short while when I heard a commotion outside. Looking out the window, it seemed that many people were carrying torches.
This situation must mean something serious has happened in the village.
"I'll go check on it." Grandma Cai had already left the room. "You just stay inside."
Yunyi nodded. After all, she was a stranger. If something really happened in the village, people would definitely suspect strangers, and she didn't want to cause trouble.
Not long after, Ah Sheng, who had gone out with Granny Cai, ran back: "Sister Yun, the bride has run away."
"Hmm?" Yunyi frowned. "Didn't you just get married?"
“I heard…” Ah Sheng lowered his voice and even leaned closer to Yun Yi, “that bride was kidnapped.”
"what?"
"The village chief's son is an idiot, the kind who can hit people. He's never been able to find a wife, but yesterday he suddenly said that Brother Ming was getting married. Unexpectedly, the bride injured Brother Ming and ran away. Now everyone is chasing after her."
Have you seen the bride?
Ah Sheng shook his head: "No, but I heard she's a maid from a wealthy family in town."
Yunyi frowned.
"Sister Yun, I'm going to help look for someone. You stay with me and don't come out."
"I can help too."
"Grandma said you shouldn't go out, so you shouldn't go out." Ah Sheng shook his head vigorously, "Just listen to Grandma."
Yunyi simply nodded and said nothing more.
Once Ah Sheng saw Yun Yi nod, he turned and ran out.
Yunyi went to Ahua's room and found that Ahua had already woken up. She checked Ahua's pulse again and found that it was much more stable.
"Sister Yun, I won't die, right?"
"Yes." Yunyi nodded. "Where are your parents?"
“I’ve never seen him. My grandmother said that my father was killed by wild animals in the mountains. My mother missed him, so she went with him.”
Yunyi patted the little girl's head: "Go to sleep."
The little girl smiled and closed her eyes, muttering "Mother" under her breath.
There was a commotion outside, and it wasn't until midnight that Grandma Cai and Ah Sheng returned.
"Did you find it?" Yunyi asked.
“We haven’t found a bride, and Brother Ming was stabbed in the chest with chopsticks. Third Uncle is too afraid to treat him, and it’s not safe to walk on the mountain road at night. We can only go to town when it’s light.” Ah Sheng yawned. “Grandma, I’m sleepy.” Then he climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed) and fell asleep.
Yunyi's eyes flashed. Kill someone with chopsticks? That bride has a ruthless streak.
Granny Cai looked at Yunyi as if she wanted to say something but hesitated, but finally smiled and said, "Miss Yun, go to sleep."
Yunyi could roughly guess what Granny Cai was thinking, but she wouldn't play the saint, so she pretended not to see it, turned around and went to the next room to lie down again.
She hadn't been asleep for long when she suddenly opened her eyes and grabbed whatever was trying to touch her face, only to find it was a big tail: "Eighteen, stop it." She really disliked the feeling of being tickled.
