Chapter 545 - 536: Farewell, My... 18-Year-Old Girl
Chapter 545 - 536: Farewell, My... 18-Year-Old Girl
The story’s end is sigh-inducing yet inevitably futile. However, despite having a narrator, it is not divine, incapable of doing everything. If it were, there wouldn’t be so much suffering in this world.
By the time he returned home, it was already two-thirty in the morning. He cautiously opened the door, avoiding disturbing Shen Yi upstairs and instead took a drink from the fridge, sitting alone at the balcony table, sipping quietly.
Guilty? A bit!
It sounds laughable. This matter originally had nothing to do with him. Jiang Yu to him was just a stranger he had met once, yet regarding her death, Su Qing did indeed harbor some guilt.
The probable reason is because he has a narrator’s insight, knowing things unknown to others, perhaps even capable of remedying some situations, but he didn’t achieve it.
Of course, he knew it’s not his responsibility, but just like the time when Zhang Heng’s father died in front of him, maybe the firefighter who caught the girl about to jump felt the same way.
Clearly, he could have changed everything, but he couldn’t fulfill his wish.
He heard the firefighter eventually became depressed. He felt he was okay, though not to that extent, it didn’t stop him from feeling upset.
Usually a poor drinker, today he surprisingly drank three cans of beer and a glass of red wine without passing out. He didn’t know what was happening to him. If not for the red wine brought by Shen Yi, he’d think he drank fake wine.
He sat there through the night. The cold wind howled outside while inside was as warm as spring. The heating system in this neighborhood was indeed impressive.
At eight in the morning, Shen Yi’s good biological clock kicked in. Still in her pajamas, she groggily descended the stairs. Upon seeing Su Qing on the balcony, she was taken aback, but noticing the bottles on the table, she realized her little man might have encountered something troubling.
It was likely something from the police station; she had seen Su Qing in this state before.
"Oh, it’s snowing, so beautiful, when did it start?" Shen Yi walked over, sat opposite him, and asked with a smile, resting her chin in her palm.
"Around three this morning. Don’t drive to work today, take the subway. It’s safer. The snow outside is heavy, and I drank," Su Qing said, gazing at the fluff-like snowflakes outside, though his eyes never moved, still looking out.
"Okay, I’ll take the subway. Did you stay here all night? When did you come back?" Shen Yi nodded in agreement.
"Around two in the morning."
"Was it... something at the police station? If it can be shared, tell me?"
Faced with Shen Yi’s inquiry, Su Qing turned his head, smiled, and shook his head: "It’s nothing, just a girl drowned. Although she’s not an acquaintance, only met her once, I feel somewhat upset about it.
Forget it, no more talks of it. I won’t make breakfast today, go out to eat."
Hearing this, Shen Yi sighed secretly, but also felt a bit fortunate. Luckily, she wasn’t someone he knew well, otherwise, it could have been troublesome.
She then nodded and smiled, "No problem, but I still want to say, you’re a criminal investigation consultant at the police station, and naturally, you will encounter things ordinary people haven’t. It’s like a doctor facing patients every day; though accustomed to life and death, feeling upset is inevitable. These are all experiences, nobody is innately skilled at handling such emotions, so don’t dwell too much on it. As long as you have a clear conscience, isn’t that enough?
If you truly dislike it, just resign, I’ll take care of you!"
While speaking, Shen Yi raised her eyebrows, making a playful face.
Seeing this, Su Qing couldn’t help but smile, reached out to stroke her cheek, and replied, "Got it, if one day I truly don’t feel like working, I’ll quit and just laze around at home, rely on you working to support me."
"Dream on, while I work hard and you laze about. If so, I’ll find time to hand over the company to Tang, then become hands-off and we both laze at home. I’ll even have a kid with you, you won’t be idle." Shen Yi retorted.
When money is sufficient, Shen Yi had the thought long ago, otherwise, she wouldn’t have let Tang Nan fade out of the entertainment circle to help manage the company. She’s human, not a machine.
Before, it was just a thought, but since they got together, the desire for being hands-off and traveling the world with her beloved grew stronger.
"Fine, reviving China’s declining birth rate, who else but us? If you want, have as many as you like, even eight at a time!" Su Qing shrugged with a smile.
Shen Yi: "Go away! You have eight at a time!"
With Shen Yi’s playful interruption, his mood indeed improved a bit. If he stayed unresponsive, Shen Yi was ready to use the initial method; with an hour left before work, it should suffice, she had her ways after all.
After chatting for a while, Shen Yi dragged him upstairs, watched him lie down before changing clothes herself, and hopped off to work.
Yes, taking the subway, as her brother told her not to drive today. Recently, Shen Yi felt quite happy, not affected by external factors.
Su Qing slept until one-thirty in the afternoon, awoken by a call from Li Zijun asking him to visit the police station; Du Qiang was taking Jiang Yu for cremation.
Upon hearing the message, naturally, he couldn’t sleep any longer. Rubbing his throbbing head, he got up to wash, then hurried to the police station.
"Where’s Qiang?" Su Qing asked upon arriving.
"In the backyard with Zhou, Jiang Yu had no relatives, and after the sudden incident last night, we had to take the body back. Du Qiang watched all night. Today, Officer Zhao asked us to buy some ink. Some wanted to accompany him, but he refused. In the end, Officer Zhao told me to contact you and let us accompany him." Li Zijun said solemnly.
Hearing this, Su Qing took a deep breath, nodding.
"Alright, then the two of us..."
"I’ll drive and take you along."
Meanwhile, in the police station’s backyard, Zhou Ning and Du Qiang lifted Jiang Yu into the hearse.
"Really don’t need me to go with you?" Zhou Ning asked.
"No, old Zhou, you work. I’ll go alone, don’t worry, I’m fine!" Du Qiang replied solemnly.
Hearing this, Zhou Ning sighed, "People are indeed cold when others are gone. Our people contacted her relatives, but upon hearing someone helps with the funeral arrangements, none came to claim the body, not even to look?"
"Isn’t that better? I think she would prefer to leave quietly; too many people, too noisy!" Du Qiang said.
To this, Zhou Ning simply patted his shoulder, "Indeed, since that’s the case, let’s go!"
Soon, Du Qiang left in the hearse, and Su Qing and his companion quickly got in their car to follow.
Soon, they arrived at the crematorium they had visited the previous day, but this time Du Qiang was there not to investigate, but to bid farewell.
"Why are you two..." Du Qiang asked with some surprise upon seeing the pair appear.
"Of course, to accompany you in seeing her off. Officer Zhao specially sent us over to see if we can help with anything," Li Zijun smiled.
Su Qing, standing beside, nodded, "We found her together, so let’s send her off together too, it’s the least we can do."
Faced with the two who were already there, Du Qiang smiled helplessly and agreed with a nod.
Inside the crematorium, the large funeral hall lacked related staff, leaving only the three of them. Jiang Yu lay in a yellow coffin, dressed in a blue school uniform, her face lightly made-up, appearing asleep if not closely looked at.
The place surrounded by flowers, those coming to pay their respects numbered only them three.
"This really is goodbye, my... 18-year-old girl."
