Chapter 355 The Grandfather and Grandson's Conversation
Chapter 355 The Grandfather and Grandson's Conversation
After a long separation, Yan Lan and Han Yan sat on the sofa in the hospital office and couldn't stop talking once they started.
Four-year-old Yan Chao sat on a small stool to the side. Seeing her mother and godmother chatting so intently, she quietly tiptoed up, gently opened the office door with her little hand, and slipped out like a nimble little squirrel, running towards the public garden in the backyard of the hospital.
Yan Lan caught a glimpse of her son out of the corner of her eye. Remembering that his watch had a GPS tracker, she didn't give him any further instructions and just smiled as she continued talking to Han Yan.
The hospital's communal garden is planted with a large number of roses, and in the afternoon sun, the air is filled with a faint fragrance of flowers.
Xiao Yan found a bench and sat down, her back straight. She even crossed her legs like an adult, her little feet swinging back and forth.
Suddenly, the Little Genius watch on his wrist chimed, and the screen lit up, displaying an "unknown number".
He tilted his head and pressed the answer button, then put the watch to his ear.
"Little friend, is that you?"
The voice of Mrs. Qin, trembling slightly, came from the other end of the phone. She was sitting in the car on her way back to Yunhu Villa.
Madam Qin was very excited. Ever since she got Xiao Yanchao's number from Qin Shi, she had been thinking about how to bring it up, afraid of scaring the child.
Little Yan, with her sharp ears, immediately recognized Madam Qin's voice. She sat up straighter and said in a childish but polite voice, "Grandma, it's me!"
That soft, gentle "Grandma" was like a sweet candy falling into Madam Qin's heart, instantly washing away all the irritation she had felt from Qin's actions.
Her furrowed brows relaxed, and the corners of her mouth couldn't help but turn up, even the fine lines at the corners of her eyes were filled with laughter. She quickly turned to Qin Xi beside her and made a "shh" gesture, then said softly into the phone, "Chao Chao is so good, she still remembers Grandma's voice."
Sitting next to Madam Qin, little Qin Xi curiously leaned closer, blinked her big eyes, tugged at Madam Qin's sleeve, and whispered, "Grandma, is the person on the other end of the phone the little brother you mentioned who helped you?"
Although she didn't understand the "troublesome things" the adults were talking about, she had heard her grandmother say that the little brother had been a great help. In her mind, anyone who could help her grandmother must be a good person.
Mrs. Qin smiled and nodded, then asked into the phone, "Chaochao, how old are you this year?"
“Everyone calls me Chaochao, and I’m four years old this year!” Little Yan Chao answered obediently, even stretching out her little hand to make a “4” gesture, even though she knew her grandma couldn’t see.
"Four years old?" Mrs. Qin's eyes lit up, and she turned to little Qin Xi and said in a surprised whisper, "The same age as our little Xi! What a coincidence! Chaochao, Grandma wants to thank you. Can you tell Grandma where you live? I'll bring little Xi to thank you and bring you some delicious little cakes, okay?"
When Xiao Yanchao heard "Sister Xiaoxi" and "Little Cake," her eyes lit up instantly, and her heart felt like a little rabbit was jumping around.
But then he remembered what his mother had said to him on the plane back to China: "Chaochao, we came back this time to see your sister, but she has her own home and her own family. We can't disturb her life, understand?"
His little head drooped, and he remained silent for a long while, as if two little voices were fighting in his heart: one saying "I want to see my sister," and the other saying "I can't disturb my sister."
Mrs. Qin, who was on the other end of the phone, heard no sound and guessed that her child might be in a dilemma. Children these days are sensible at a young age, and asking for the address like that was indeed like "checking the household registration," which would inevitably make the child wary.
She quickly softened her tone: "If Chaochao feels uncomfortable, we can arrange to meet outside, like in a park or a dessert shop? You can also have your parents come with you. Grandma just wants to thank you in person, that's all."
As she was speaking, just as she was about to mention the name of her favorite family-friendly dessert shop, the phone suddenly went dead, leaving only a busy tone.
"Every day? Every day?"
Mrs. Qin called out twice into the phone anxiously, but there was still no response from the receiver. Helpless, she hung up the phone, her brows furrowing again.
Xiao Yanchao in the garden also panicked. He took the watch off his ear, poked the screen, and found that the screen was already black—it turned out that the watch had run out of power and shut down automatically.
"Oh dear!" he muttered under his breath, then jumped off the bench and ran quickly toward his mother's office, thinking to himself, "I need to charge my phone quickly, otherwise I won't be able to meet my sister with Grandma."
At this moment, Yan Lan and Han Yan had finished their conversation and were carrying their suitcases as they walked out of the office.
Han Yan spotted Xiao Yanchao running towards her at a glance. She quickly stepped forward, bent down, and picked him up. She even reached out and wiped the thin layer of sweat from his forehead with the back of her hand. Her tone was a little reproachful but full of heartache: "Chaochao, why are you running so fast? Have you forgotten that you were weak when you were little? Although you are better now, you can't be so reckless. If you fall, your godmother will be heartbroken."
She still remembers that Chaochao was a premature baby.
Little Yan nestled in Han Yan's arms, her little hands clutching her collar, pouting defiantly: "Godmother, I'm perfectly healthy now! Mommy said I can go to kindergarten now, so I won't fall down so easily!"
As he spoke, he took his dead watch off his wrist and stuffed it into his small pocket, thinking to himself, "I'll call Grandma after I get home and charge it."
Upon hearing "kindergarten," Han Yan's eyes widened, and she turned to Yan Lan: "Lanlan, are you planning to send Chaochao to kindergarten? Does that mean you're going to move back to China permanently?"
She felt both happy and worried. She was happy that her friend had finally moved on from her past heartbreak and was willing to stay in a familiar place. She was worried because Singapore was so small. If the person who harmed Yan Lan's daughter back then was still around, would they come looking for her again?
Looking at Han Yan's worried eyes, Yan Lan gently patted her arm, her tone calm but firm: "I plan to stay in China for six months. The person who harmed my daughter back then hasn't been found yet, and I can't just let it go. I had to leave back then because I was weak after giving birth to Chaochao, but this time I will never back down."
She paused, then looked at her son in her arms, her eyes softening: "I've been thinking about sending Chaochao to kindergarten for a long time. He used to be in poor health and even running and jumping was difficult for him. Now he can do some simple exercises. Going to kindergarten and playing with other children will allow him to grow up like a normal child and also boost his immunity, which is good for him."
Hearing this, Han Yan felt relieved and immediately patted her chest, saying, "Don't worry about the kindergarten! I know a few reliable people in the education field. They'll guarantee to find a good environment and responsible teachers for Chaochao so he can be happy."
Yan Lan knew Han Yan's character, so she smiled and nodded, "Then I'll leave it to you."
Meanwhile, Madam Qin returned to Yunhu Villa with a heart full of disappointment.
As soon as the car stopped, she hurried to the living room, where she saw Shen Yunzhong on the sofa, drinking tea. When he saw her come in, he said slowly, "Why are you only coming back now?"
The smile on Madam Qin's face vanished instantly, her expression darkened, and she stopped in her tracks.
