Chapter 1076: Empty Pockets
Chapter 1076: Empty Pockets
Xue Heng didn't have much money besides his salary; everyone in the family had to be mindful of others' feelings before acting.
The father also had to appease the richest concubine.
After hearing this, Liang Chongyue immediately checked Xue Heng's account and found that he indeed didn't have much money.
He then silently closed the survey panel.
"Is there enough money?" Xue Wan asked, a little worried.
She also remembers when her parents were arguing when she was a child, her mother was too busy to take care of her.
When Xue Heng instructed his servants to pack her things, he discovered that her clothes were all too small.
Take out your own money and take her to the street to buy a new one.
As a result, the two of them were too poor to afford silk and satin.
You could buy two outfits from a lower-end brand.
However, Xue Wan wasn't going anywhere else; she was going to enter the palace.
It was too late to ask her father for money that night; the clothing store was closed.
Then Xue Wan entered the palace wearing clothes that were a size too small, and returned wearing clothes specially made for her by the Imperial Household Department.
The Empress Dowager also sent many jewels and ornaments to Xue Wan to bring back.
After rubbing their parents' faces on the ground, at Xue Wan's prompting, she and Xue Heng finally started to have more money in their hands.
"As long as the mistresses don't give you fakes, then it's enough."
"If it's not enough, please add more for me, brother. You must have made a lot of money over the years."
Xue Heng really wanted to take his pockets out and show them to Xue Wan.
If he had money, would he need to swindle the real handwritings of his mistresses after knowing about this?
"If you don't have money, make up for what you're missing yourself. I've done more than enough. I'm not a money-making machine."
Xue Wan knew he would say this; Xue Heng was just too stingy.
She even had to help support her mistress and her child.
I really don't know what Xue Heng can do with all this money in his hands.
Things you can't take with you when you're born, and you can't take with you when you die.
It's more important than life itself.
"Thank you so much for taking care of everything for me, brother. I'll head back now."
Xue Heng quickly waved his hand to let her go.
If they stayed any longer, Xue Heng would be furious.
After Xue Wan left Xue Heng's courtyard, she could hear the sounds of the people hiding in the shadows from afar.
Sometimes Xue Wan really suspected that people outside were saying that their family's ancestral graves had been blessed with good fortune.
She seriously doubted whether the ancestral grave where the incense was burned was someone else's.
Her seemingly promising third and fourth brothers' bodyguards were hiding behind the artificial hill, spying on her.
Xue Wan really wanted to ask, "Is it even human?"
Did they treat her like a normal person?
The shadows behind the artificial hill were now visible.
Sometimes Xue Wan even wondered if she had been in the palace for too long.
I just couldn't stand these flawed and useless people.
But if you think about it carefully, how could those secret guards manage to find a crooked tree in the palace where they could lie down and stand guard?
It is not comparable to such trash.
After Xue Wan left, she returned to her own courtyard and saw that her mother was still there, and had even brought a lot of things with her.
Her yard is almost completely filled.
"Mother, what do you mean?"
Upon hearing the sound, Fang Yucheng turned around with a smile and pulled Xue Wan into the house.
"The clothes that your mother sent someone to make for you a few days ago have all been delivered today. Your mother was wrong just now, so please don't be angry with her."
My mother is illiterate and doesn't know many words; she can't compare to you children who have studied in the palace.
Liang Chongyue felt that these words sounded familiar, yet she felt like she hadn't heard them in a long time.
"Return these clothes to where they came from. I'm going back to the military camp after the New Year, and there's no room for them all. Giving them to me would be a waste."
Xue Wan glanced at the several large boxes of clothes out of the corner of her eye.
The origin of these clothes is even more questionable.
“I’ll talk to your father tonight and tell him that you don’t need to go to the military camp after the New Year. You’re a girl, and it’s not good for your reputation to stay in the military camp with those men every day.”
Xue Wan snorted coldly, her gaze towards her mother as cold as poison.
"Reputation? There are women in the military camp, and female generals too. Mother, you can't do that. You're trapped in this square courtyard for the rest of your life. Don't even think about trapping me here too."
As she spoke, Xue Wan casually picked out a piece of clothing that looked expensive and, in front of her mother, forcefully tore it in half.
"Xue Wan! These clothes were all sent to you by the Fang family according to your size, how could you!"
Xue Wan looked at the finger her mother was pointing at.
"The Fang family? Is Mother planning to pack me up and send me to the Fang family? And even the packing materials will be provided by the Fang family?"
Xue Wan went through it in her mind; there was no man in the Fang family who was about her age.
She was seven or eight years older than two of her cousins whose wives had died.
"What are you saying? My shops don't make much money. In a few days, it will be the spring banquet of various high-ranking families. If you don't dress up nicely, people will start to mistake your sisters for the legitimate daughters of my Xue family."
Fang Yucheng thought about how her daughter was never by her side during the banquets.
She had no choice but to follow her husband's instructions and take the children born out of wedlock with her.
The Xue family's glory was all earned by her daughter, yet her daughter herself remained unknown.
The people in the backyard got all the benefits.
Xue Wan had long since become indifferent to these things; she didn't need such empty fame for her future.
As long as Her Highness the Crown Princess is around, her future will be so bright it will blind the entire Xue family.
She has worked hard and made progress all these years, not so that she could go to the Spring Banquet to meet the young masters of various families.
Then she waited for the bridal sedan chair to arrive and carry her from one square cage to another.
"Then Mother should adopt the sisters into her own family. That way, the sisters can continue practicing martial arts without interruption, and Mother can still have a beautiful and presentable daughter."
"There can be more than one."
My father's romantic escapades over the years could fill a book.
She had so many brothers and sisters that the Xue family mansion felt crowded.
"Xue Wan! Don't you even know anything?"
Xue Wan was too exhausted to argue with her mother about these things anymore.
She was just waiting for the audience with His Highness before he went on his travels.
However, the chances of this happening are not certain.
If she couldn't wait any longer, she packed up and went back to the military camp early.
She couldn't stand staying in this house for even a quarter of an hour.
Xue Heng must have had a tough time. He's managed to get along so well in this family, and sometimes he even has to help her navigate things. It's really not easy.
“If Mother doesn’t leave with all this stuff, I’m going to burn it all down.”
The order to leave was practically plastered on Fang Yucheng's face.
She just didn't understand. Everyone used to envy her for having such a wonderful daughter as Xue Wan.
The Xue Wan of the past was also sensible; she would do whatever she was asked to do.
Everything has changed now.
